As India emerges as an important global player, her vast and prodigious human resources need to be further harnessed through responsible and meaningful education to achieve the goals of an equitable and just society in an everchanging world. Educational leaders are faced with the demands of a rapidly changing global environment. The task of preparing future citizens is becoming increasingly complex and daunting and requires the skills of leadership and the aptitude for lifelong learning. As the school system continues to be the agency that has a major share of this responsibility, the contribution of Principals, Vice-Principals and Senior Teachers towards this transformation is at once significant and enormous.
Keeping this in mind a training programme for Education Leadership (ELP), was launched in 1994 by Centre for Education and Management Development (CEMD), New Delhi. This is a one-year, open-learning Post-Graduate Diploma course developed by the Centre for Education and Management Development (CEMD), New Delhi, and is conducted by Spirit of Leadership (SOL), New Delhi through an interactive, participatory and experiential learning process.
This unique programme, based on studies of similar courses conducted at the University of Washington and Harvard University, USA, has been customized to suit the context of Indian schools.
Sundaram Educational Trust is partnered in this project with SOL-CEMD ,New Delhi.
The ELP aims to provide the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for school principals and administrators to shape the future of schools and their students. The main objectives of ELP are to facilitate change by developing leaders and institutions and provide effective and empowering leadership. The sessions are based on experiential learning principles and the consensus-seeking model based on constructivist pedagogy. The programme is conducted in three sessions spread over a period of 10 months.
The participants who have completed the assignments and portfolio are awarded Post Graduate Diploma Certificates.
SOL-CEMD has conducted the Education Leadership programme for Twelve batches in Chennai. The programmes were well received and appreciated with demand for participation always exceeding the limited seats available.
